Do you have a "before" picture to compare to?

I recently tried to gain weight for a period of a few months and I know what you mean about having to stuff yourself. For me, it was seemingly impossible to eat enough Fat & Protein to gain weight. Knowing how Carbohydrates drive Insulin and the Anabolic effects of Insulin, I resorted to eating huge amounts of White rice, basically every 2 or 3 hours throughout the day. During that time I gained a bit of Fat along with big increases in Strength. In my opinion, the most important factor was the Rate at which I aimed to gain weight (not exceeding 0.5kg per week). I imagine a slower rate would lead to less Fat accumulation, but also slower increases in Strength.aelephanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15337430274390797972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-106994905043717952012-07-13T17:22:26.386-07:002012-07-13T17:22:26.386-07:00I use both Fitbit and CalorieKing but I'm only...I use both Fitbit and CalorieKing but I'm only tracking calories on Fitbit right now (I have daily weight data in CK going back to 2008). If I was forced to choose, I'd pick CK. While Fitbit is flashier and the device is nifty, I don't find it particularly useful and the whole "adjust your day's calories to your day's activities" concept is more aggravating to me than it is motivational. I'll try to work up a post that details the tools I use and how I go about tracking and how I determine calorie allowances in more detail.

As far as stability goes, I don't know. I work graveyard shifts that run 12 hours leaving me very little time to prepare meals and get sufficient sleep. I do have longer weekends but I have to be proactive about planning ahead. Most people gain a lot of weight when they work nights but I've managed to lose quite a bit in spite of that.

I've had much easier schedules than this in my life and have gotten fat on them by eating crap food.

I'm not saying it's all a matter of discipline and self control. It's amazing how much the data has been tortured to prove a correlation between different cholesterol measures and heart disease risk. I've personally become quite skeptical of any causal link between them. Dr. R. Eades has a couple of good articles about Framingham here: http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/cardiovascular-disease/framingham-flip-flop/ & http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/cardiovascular-disease/framingham-follies/

A good quote from a cholesterol researcher:

"[...] it is not possible to select a critical lipid value that separates potential CHD candidates from the rest of the population. The lack of a clear demarcation of high-risk coronary candidates based solely on LDL cholesterol values indicates the need to consider dyslipidemic risk in the context of the associated lipids and the burden of other risk factors."

Probably LDL is not that predictive of heart disease and HDL is very important in preventing it. As Dr. Eades goes on to explain, a diet high in saturated fat is one of the few ways people can increase their HDL.aelephanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15337430274390797972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-61778507868225905992012-06-28T19:58:44.335-07:002012-06-28T19:58:44.335-07:00While I agree that the meat consumption map doesn&...While I agree that the meat consumption map doesn't appear to show as strong of a correlation, it certainly is there. I could just easily start nit-picking regions where soda consumption and diabetes don't match up as nicely, either.

Where did I suggest that soda isn't a major cause of obesity and diabetes? I even said that "I agree with Lustig that soda is very unhealthy". I'm sorry if I failed to make my point clear in this post because you appear to be missing it. I'm not arguing that soda isn't a cause of diabetes. I'm also not arguing that meat is. I'm pointing out the fact the using such correlations as proof is bad science.

In my opinion, using bad science to support a good cause is a bad habit because we lose credibility every time we do so. That's all I'm trying to say. Even if your claims are correct and most of what you say to support your position is accurate, when you start use crap science, people stop listening.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01731711473348812736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-64151296768537933512012-06-28T19:37:59.599-07:002012-06-28T19:37:59.599-07:00As much as I appreciate your high school stats &qu...As much as I appreciate your high school stats "Correlation does not imply causation" quip, I believe you are missing the point.Your second map does not have a correlation nearly as strong as the one comparing diabetes and soda consumption. California, a state that apparently has a very low concentration of diabetes, has a strong concentration of meat and poultry consumption. Also Mississippi and Louisiana, states that have so heavy a concentration of diabetes they are hard to see, are relatively meat and poultry free. There are many more comparisons that don't match up. I appreciate your concern for misleading statistics, but this meat and poultry comparison map is not a valid argument. Arguing against soda as being a major cause of obesity and diabetes will put you on the wrong side of this health battle. Also as long as I'm here, meat and poultry, as most Americans eat it, IS unhealthy. We eat far too much, and fast food, as the number one source of meat and poultry in our diets, has contributed just as much as soda to diabetes. This alone justifies any correlations between meat, poultry, and diabetes. I disagree that there is one, but if there is, it certainly makes sense.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14345731799159137464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-52604807856693543442012-06-23T17:22:13.412-07:002012-06-23T17:22:13.412-07:00I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing...I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to play a different game from time to time. When the two games are "weight management" and "gym progress", it's difficult to make significant gains in both at the same time, especially if you've been doing either for more than a year. Sometimes you have to make a choice and neither one of them is wrong.

Right now I'm trying to cycle between the two and I'd like to work out an overall methodology that allows me to do both over the long run. I think something like 3-4 months of focusing on strength followed by 3-4 months of cutting will be a workable strategy.

Anyway, good luck with the strength gains and thanks for stopping by and leaving a note!Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01731711473348812736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-53953287457454095512012-06-23T11:48:47.593-07:002012-06-23T11:48:47.593-07:00After 3 years of low-carbing, with stable bodyweig...After 3 years of low-carbing, with stable bodyweight of 82 kg I decided to start weight training and kind of traded the "game" criteria - now it was "gym progress" instead of "bodyweight".

Prior to lifting, it was easy to decide "ok, it's 84 kg now, I let myself go, I will do a bit of keto to go back to 81".

But after starting my lifting "career" (right before my 40th birthday btw) I started more to think "will I manage to do 5 reps with this weight next training?" rather than "I weigh 92 now, maybe should do something about it?"

So it may be that we switch the game sometimes, and what would be considered failure in the old game, is a success (or at least transparent) in the new one?
(although I wouldn't call my lifting a failure, even if it helped me gain a dosen kilos)Zbighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10828241285872286311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-24653832651413898572012-06-14T17:55:46.343-07:002012-06-14T17:55:46.343-07:00It would be interesting to see how that works for ...It would be interesting to see how that works for you. I looked through the transcript of Mat's interview with Chris Kresser and several times he groups all of them together: "meat, vegetables, tubers and fruit". As far as I can tell, he's totally fine with them.

Just out of curiosity, I plugged bananas into my Fitbit account to see how the calories break down. I picked bananas because low carbers often recoil in horror because there's 29 grams of sugar in a single banana.

Well, in order to get to 2,000 calories, I would have to consume 5 lbs of bananas. Five POUNDS. I can't fathom ingesting that much food on a daily basis without intentionally overriding my satiety signals. So, from just a calorie standpoint, I think it would be difficult to get fat on a diet of whole fruit and see no problem including it in a diet composed of whole foods.

Now, if you take five pounds of fruit, juice it and drink all those calories instead, you're eliminating all the fiber that would actually be satiating. Once you crunch the numbers, it keeps boiling down to eating real food with minimal processing.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01731711473348812736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-70144683569668947942012-06-14T08:59:28.545-07:002012-06-14T08:59:28.545-07:00one of my observations also.my son and my wife eat...one of my observations also.my son and my wife eat all kinds of foods, including junk.they are both lean and have great blood work.they eat super slow.every lean person i,ve ever witnessed has eaten very slowley.just as you say,i gobble my food.i think you hit it,when you eat too fast you by-pass tha satiety signal.i notice if i eat a small meal quickly i,m still hungry unless i wait about 20 minutes, then i seam to be quite satisfied.
'
i,m trying to eat slower to see if it helps reduce calories spontaneously.cwaiandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04837925374165088179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-57083226990492354382012-06-14T08:47:43.192-07:002012-06-14T08:47:43.192-07:00great video.what is your(or matt,s)take on fruit c...great video.what is your(or matt,s)take on fruit consumption?from the video it seams as if he is against fruit.

cjcwaiandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04837925374165088179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189114050423988268.post-10424296177597421092012-06-14T02:20:15.092-07:002012-06-14T02:20:15.092-07:00My pleasure.
